Governor Malloy Wrong on Teacher Tax
Governor Malloy shocked teachers in Connecticut today when he refused to rule out supporting a Teacher Tax. He also misspoke when he said he had not heard from teachers regarding the Teacher Tax. In fact, he has already received more than 2,000 emails from Connecticut Education Association members who said they were against the Teacher Tax and urged him to veto the Republican budget. Thank you for your advocacy and activism in fighting back against the teacher tax and the cost shift proposals. The Republican budget that passed the legislature contained a teacher tax, but no cost shift. However, the governor has said he will veto that plan, and that would mean legislators once again will be considering both issues to try to solve the budget deficit. We must stand strong and ready to fight back against both the cost shift and the teacher tax because they hurt students, teachers, and public education.Because of your continued outreach and strong objections to the teacher tax, there is a lot of misinformation being shared by some legislators. Yesterday, the Washington Post ran a story which unfortunately, confirms many expectations. While we await the anticipated May 23 release of the complete FY2018 Trump budget, and with Secretary DeVos scheduled to appear before the House Labor-HHS-Education Appropriations subcommittee on May 24, we wanted to provide you with the “low-lights” gleaned from the Post’s reporting.
